This post is written in response to the front page headlines of today’s Times Herald Record, which reads, ” Many workers see no retirement in sight”.

Some of you who know me or at least know my background might be reading this a saying, “Wait a minute now, you’re a chiropractor, what the heck are you doing promoting early retirement through a home-based business?”  Well, that’s a very good question.  And, the answer is that while I love being a chiropractor, there are a number of reasons why I chose to diversify.

  1. The business of health care is very draining; ask any doctor.
  2. The prospect of selling my practice at retirement for a good profit is becoming less real; ask any sole practitioner.
  3. If I am not seeing patients my income goes away.
  4. The thought of a second income stream that is residual has always intrigued me.

The truth is that with the economy continuing to affect the lifestyle of many people, there are a select group of people who are seeing early retirement as a distinct possibility.  These people have discovered the unique opportunity that a home-based business provides.

Over the years, it has been shown that during lean economic times, home-based businesses flourish; Why?  Because of the potential to work a part-time opportunity and convert it into a very real full-time business.  For some people, an extra $500-$1000 per month is all that is necessary to prevent bankruptcy or foreclosure.  Then as their business builds the possibility of leaving their 9-5 to make more money while working from home is a very appealing prospect.

However, as many people have discovered, not all home-based businesses are created equal.  They’ve come to learn the importance of finding a company that offers:

  1. A unique product or service.
  2. A product or service that is consumable; requiring repeat business.
  3. A product or service that does not require a lifestyle change, making it more appealing to more people.
  4. A company that provides an equitable compensation plan.

What many people also discover is that, as with any other business, operating a home-based business takes commitment to a 2-5 year game-plan; there is no such thing as a “Quick Buck”.  The significant difference here is that the start up cost and monthly overhead for a brick and mortar business is typically huge.  For a home-based business the start-up and monthly overhead investment is extremely modest, making it very affordable for most people, even during lean times.

People are starting to build their home-based business now, knowing that in 2 to 5 years they can retire from their 9-5 and enjoy their life making a significant income from home.
